American Red Cross Disaster Health and Sheltering Course - Part 1

 

American Red CrossThis part of the Disaster Health and Sheltering Course is completed independently. Nursing students can participate either with an instructor or individually.

Part 1 is made up of 3 components:

  • An American Red Cross video to help you understand its history.
  • The course PowerPoint Presentation which is separated into three sections.
  • A Post-Test.

Participants should complete all three components in preparation for the classroom exercise.

Operation Shelter Care Tabletop Exercise

Operation Shelter Care - A General Population Shelter Tabletop Exercise

The purpose of the Operation Shelter Care Tabletop Exercise is to provide nursing students that have participated in Part 1 of the American Red Cross Disaster Health and Sheltering Course an opportunity to assess their understanding of the various healthcare-related challenges they will encounter when working within a shelter.

During the exercise participants will:

  • Provide health assessments, treatment and referrals as needed.
  • Coordinate with public health agencies and other community health providers.
  • Screen and assess clients to meet access and / or functional needs.
  • Provide casework for disaster-related health needs.

Schedule Exercise

Nursing instructors can schedule an offering of the Operation Shelter Care - A General Population Shelter Tabletop Exercise for their students by accessing, completing and submitting an Schedule Exercise Request Form. The request to schedule an exercise must be submitted three weeks prior to the planned date to offer the exercise.

Once the exercise has been scheduled additional information regarding the exercise will be e-mailed to the instructor.

Exercise Delivery System

This exercise will be facilitated via an internet based application entitled ON-Line eXercise (ONX) System which will allow instructor and students to participate in the exercise from their classroom.
